Dec 08, 2009· Secondhand ballast has often lost its sharpness. 20/32mm (mixed 20mm to 32mm size) is useful for packing existing sleepers, although I prefer 20/40mm. For new track I suggest 32/50mm. The larger sizes have more voids, which helps drainage.
